Team Building and Dynamics

team building
What are the programmes all about?

Team building is the process of building great teams.

Dr. Meredith Belbin describes a phenomenon he calls 'The Apollo Syndrome' - a situation where teams of highly capable individuals can, collectively, perform poorly. He reported some surpisingly poor results with teams comprised of people who had sharp, analytical minds and high mental ability - he called this the 'Apollo Syndrome'.

His criteria for selecting these teams has elements in common with criteria for selecting teams within our own organisations - using ability, experience and aptitude as the traits seemingly best suited to achieving success. Often, our initial perception of our own 'Apollo' teams is that they are bound to succeed - they're clever people, right? However, Belbin found his own results were quite the reverse, and the Apollo teams often finished near the bottom of eight teams.

Team failure is regularly due to certain flaws in the way teams are created and operated:
  • They spend excessive time in abortive or destructive debate, trying to persuade other team members to adopt their own view, and demonstrating a flair for spotting weaknesses in others' arguments. This led to the discussion equivalent of 'the deadly embrace' or team deadlock.
  • They have difficulties in their decision making, with little coherence in the decisions reached.
  • Team members tend to act along their own favourite lines without taking account of what fellow members were doing, and the team proved difficult to manage.
  • In some instances, teams recognise what is happening and over compensate - they avoid confrontation, which equally leads to problems in decision making.
On the ALP team building and dynamics programme, you will discover the difference between a group, and a team. We will help you characterise successful teams and deliver the learning required to allow you to develop groups into high performing teams within your own business.

The sessions are highly interactive with the course director working in a facilitation role….aiding and steering the learning. The content of the programmes is practical and based on real team issues which relate directly to the delegates and your business.

The delegates are motivated and encouraged by the fact that the skills, which have been discussed in the training environment, can be applied immediately into their live environment.
